Día de los Muertos

This special all-school event promises to be a warm, colorful, heartfelt celebration! All of our students have been working hard learning poems and music, making commemorative artwork and building beautiful altars in remembrance of their loved ones and ancestors. Come join the community and the magic of this procession.

Start time: TONIGHT Friday, November 2nd at 6:30 PM

Clothing: Please make sure that your child is dressed and ready when you arrive. Students and their families are encouraged to dress in traditional (but not scary) skeleton attire with painted faces. Take care to read emails and notes home regarding costuming for this festival.

Face Painting: We will be doing traditional Dia de los Muertos face painting on all of the students for the festival. This is a time consuming process that we will begin at 5:00 and supported by our middle school students. If this is something you are able to do at home before arriving, that would be much appreciated. Skull Face Paint Tutorial. Up to step 2 is good...step 3 and 4 if you want to be more creative.

If you are bringing your child to school early to have his/her face painted, please remember that in the off time prior to 6:30 it is expected that you will directly supervise your child. We will be very busy setting up and preparing, so it is imperative that all students are supervised. Classrooms will not be open.

Food: This is not a pot luck and snacks will be limited. HOT CHOCOLATE (both dairy and vegan) and PAN DE MUERTO will be served after the students’ performance. Please, feed your kids before the event. BRING CUPS for you and your family, as none will be provided at the event. Students can use their classrooms' cups.

Students in Extended Care: If your child is staying in Extended Care, please make sure he/she has all the necessary clothing for the evening and an extra meal packed.

We could still use more:

  • Battery operated candles of any size or shape for the luminaries and Las Ofrendas (please label them so we will make sure they get returned after the festival)
  • Marigolds, sunflowers (real, paper, silk...any and all are appreciated)
  • Bring a family and/or pet photo or offering to add to the community altar

I’d like to send a HUGE THANK YOU to Gracie’s mom Katie, thank you so much for doing all of the skeleton shirts for Miss. Barnum’s kids. Our children look “scary”. - Megan Chieppa (Ben’s mom)
